Support Responsible Redevelopment & Community Investment @ 5395 Covington Hwy. Decatur, GA
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents, business owners, and community stakeholders, support the responsible redevelopment of the currently vacant property located at 5395 Covington Highway, Decatur, GA.
This highly visible property, formerly a pharmacy, has remained underutilized and does not currently contribute to the safety, appearance, or economic vitality of the area. Activating this site with a well-managed business will restore daily activity, improve maintenance, and strengthen the overall condition of the corridor.
The proposed redevelopment includes a retail package store (no on-premise consumption) that will be professionally managed with a strong focus on safety, compliance, and community standards.
This project is expected to:
Reoccupy a vacant building with active, on-site management
Improve lighting, cleanliness, and overall property appearance
Implement strong security measures and strict no-loitering policies
Create local jobs and generate tax revenue for DeKalb County
Provide a safer, more stable alternative to a long-term vacant property
We recognize concerns about the concentration of certain types of businesses along Covington Highway. However, this proposal represents an opportunity to raise the standard of quality, safety, and professionalism at a key intersection.
The applicants have a demonstrated track record of operating clean, compliant, and well-managed businesses and have committed to maintaining a high standard at this location.
Additionally, the applicants have expressed a willingness to collaborate with local leadership on potential community-oriented use of a small portion of the building, such as a police substation or similar public safety presence, utilizing the existing rear drive-thru access if appropriate.
We believe that responsible reinvestment and active management are preferable to vacancy, and that this project can contribute positively to the surrounding community.
For these reasons, we support moving this proposal forward for consideration and approval.
