Support Reopening the South Baltimore Learning Center

The Issue

The South Baltimore Learning Center (SBLC) has been a beacon of hope and transformation for our community. With a mission to improve the self-sufficiency of educationally disadvantaged adults, SBLC has provided invaluable services including functional literacy, life skills training, and career preparation. We are the solution to numerous issues that plague our community. Baltimore City residents deserve a FREE program that they can attend to better their lives and make Baltimore a thriving city.

Unfortunately, this vital institution is temporarily closed due to a severe financial crisis. Without urgent support, we risk losing a cornerstone of empowerment and growth in Baltimore. The SBLC offers essential adult education, workforce development, and mindfulness programs, all of which are crucial for enhancing the personal and professional lives of our citizens.

The closure of SBLC would strip countless individuals of the opportunity to develop critically needed skills, affecting not only their futures but the future of our city as a whole. In a community that struggles with unemployment, poverty, and lack of educational opportunities, SBLC plays a pivotal role in providing solutions and hope.

Evidence shows that adult education significantly improves economic opportunities and social mobility. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, adults who engage in education and training have better employment rates and earn significantly higher wages. By supporting SBLC, you're advocating for a brighter future for Baltimore, where citizens have the tools they need to succeed.

We're calling on the community, local businesses, and public officials to rally together to provide the financial support needed to keep the SBLC open. Let's ensure that all Baltimore residents have access to the education and training necessary to lead successful lives.

Join us in this crucial cause. Sign the petition to reopen the South Baltimore Learning Center and contribute to building a stronger, more educated, and prosperous Baltimore.

Thank you for your advocacy on behalf of the South Baltimore Learning Center. Supporting adult education in Maryland is critical and remains a key priority for my work in the Senate of Maryland. That is why Delegate Clippinger and I passed the original legislation to create Maryland’s adult high school program. Comptroller Lierman, Delegates Clippinger, Lewis, Edelson, and I recently learned of SBLC’s temporary closure and are all working to support them. We are in touch with the Maryland State Department of Education, Maryland Department of Labor, and potential private funders in the hopes of resolving the underlying issue Senator Ferguson
