The Issue

The separation of church and state is a fundamental principle of American democracy. However, recent initiatives by the Kern County Board of Education to post the Ten Commandments in public schools across Kern County threaten to undermine this critical aspect of our Constitution. This proposition not only disregards the diverse religious beliefs of students but also sets a dangerous precedent for favoring a single religion in public institutions.

According to the First Amendment, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. By posting the Ten Commandments—a core religious text in Judeo-Christian traditions—in public schools, Kern County risks alienating students from different spiritual backgrounds, including atheists, agnostics, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Jews, and many others. It’s crucial to maintain an inclusive environment that respects the religious freedoms and beliefs of all students.

Moreover, a study by the Pew Research Center highlights that the United States is becoming more religiously diverse. The percentage of Americans who identify as religiously unaffiliated stands at 26%, a number that has steadily increased over the past decade. In such a multicultural society, it is inappropriate to prioritize one religious belief over others in an educational setting meant to nurture young minds in an unbiased manner.

Schools should be a place where students of all religions and belief systems can come together to learn and grow. Instead of promoting religious texts, schools in Kern County should focus on educational materials that emphasize universal values such as empathy, kindness, and respect—principles that can be found in all cultures and belief systems.

To support this vision of inclusivity and uphold the core values enshrined in the Constitution, we urge leaders in Kern County to prevent the posting of the Ten Commandments in its public schools. Let us stand together to protect the future of our children and ensure they learn in an environment free from religious imposition.
