My nephew’s family, like many families of servicemen and women, struggle every day with life without their beloved members aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. For over 220 days, since the ship departed San Diego on Nov. 21, 2025, these brave men and women have been on deployment away from their families, without a single port visit. It's unfair to them, and the emotional toll is immense. These service members’ dedication and resilience deserve our utmost respect.

The men and women aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln are experiencing extreme hardship as they serve our nation, defending our ideals and ensuring our safety. Being at sea without a shore leave for over 220 days is not normal and is not only physically exhausting but also emotionally straining. Most of these sailors haven't seen their families since last year, missing holidays, milestones, and valuable time with loved ones. The stress and loneliness take a significant toll on both the sailors and their families back home. Separation of this magnitude is more than just a personal struggle, it is a national concern that demands immediate action.

It is time for our government to show real support for those who sacrifice so much for us. This can start with prioritizing relief for the USS Abraham Lincoln crew. Relief could include a scheduled port visit at the earliest opportunity to allow rest and recuperation, relieving the current deployment stops, or returning home as soon as possible. We should explore all available options to alleviate their burden.

History has shown us that extended deployments without relief lead to detrimental impacts on the mental health and effectiveness of service members. Our sailors risk burnout and diminished morale, compromising operational readiness and the ability to maintain focus over long periods.

We call on the United States Department of Defense and relevant congressional bodies to reassess current deployment policies to ensure that those who faithfully serve do not do so at the expense of their mental health and family stability. These individuals have committed their lives to protect us; it is only just that we look after their welfare in return.
