Support Rangers: Sign The Hyères Ranger declaration

The Issue

The Hyères Ranger declaration from the 10th IRF World Ranger Congress, held this October, reaffirms the critical ranger support for the KM-GBF targets adopted during COP15. In return, rangers call upon the CBD community to provide the necessary commitment and support to equip them with the resources needed to fully harness the potential of this often-overlooked conservation workforce.

450 rangers from 88 countries carry this message to CBD COP 16 in Cali which illustrates what is required to achieve these targets. Rangers know that they are part of the global solution but their representation must be included as part of a new “major group” for the biodiversity workforce, at the CBD. Without this we will not be able to adequately mobilize the labour force to create a productive and sustainable environment.

We, governments, NGOs and ranger employers, endorse this message and demonstrate our support for rangers at COP16:

  1. Rangers are Planetary Health Workers addressing the converging issues of climate change, biodiversity loss, and the spread of zoonotic diseases.
  2. The Hyères Ranger Declaration emphasizes the need for a professional, inclusive ranger and resourced workforce.
  3. There is a pressing need for ranger recognition, both at the national and international level.
  4. Competency and skill development for rangers is critical to achieving global conservation goals.
  5. Diversity and inclusivity in ranger roles must be actively promoted, including support for Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and women.
  6. The Code of Conduct and accountability measures for rangers are essential for professional integrity.
  7. Rangers' contributions to global biodiversity, climate objectives, and conservation finance must be recognized, along with their role in preserving cultural heritage.
