Support pedestrianisation of Kirkgate, Ripon

Support pedestrianisation of Kirkgate, Ripon
The Issue
The pedestrianisation of Kirkgate, Ripon has been a long-held dream for the grassroots businesses and residents of our beautiful and ancient market town/cathedral city. For our ever increasing tourists and visitors it is a 'no brainer'! Not least it unlocks our excellent city plan to give us pride and real influence in our city's direction as a new unitary/devolved authority.
For what feels like forever, we have sought the opportunity to transform Kirkgate into a vibrant, flourishing hub for both tourists and residents alike. The development of a café-cultured Kirkgate is within our reach, and it promises to unlock the potential of our local businesses and community, creating a bustling thoroughfare that benefits everyone. We want it, as proven in numerous surveys and consultations; it is ongoing backed by Ripon City Council, the combined authority under Mayor David Skaith and all those with any knowledge of Ripon's history, heritage and potential. North Yorkshire Council are therefore blocking this community.
As it stands, Kirkgate is suffering. The flow of traffic has been a blight on the charm and accessibility of our market town/city, hindering both development and the quality of life for its residents. Imagine a Kirkgate free from the noise and pollution of vehicles, a place where families can stroll, visitors can explore, and businesses can thrive. Cities across the UK have reaped immense benefits from pedestrianisation, and it's high time Ripon joined in! We have as much to offer as anyone out there, don't we!?
Research and examples abound: we have studied them in depth! The pedestrian plazas in cities like Birmingham and Brighton, more locally Yarm, Durham, and Beverley, have not only bolstered local economies but also significantly improved air quality and overall urban life. The message is clear; its damn hard work getting there ... but then there's no looking back! When they're thought through they work! (we have done A LOT of thinking through, believe!!) Visitors are coming now, let's get ready for them, welcome them properly, as well as providing the best for ourselves by developing and filling our local shops, cafés, and market stalls—a massive boost to our economy.
The groundwork is truly done, and now we need North Yorkshire Council to hear us. Studies have shown that pedestrian-friendly zones encourage more foot traffic, which in turn increases spending at local businesses. It's an investment into our future that promises richer cultural heritage, economic growth, and a healthier environment for future generations.
By signing this petition, you are lending your voice to a vital cause. You are supporting the dream of a Kirkgate where the community and its visitors can gather without concern for traffic disruption. Help us appeal to North Yorkshire Council to take this significant step forward and transform Kirkgate into the haven that it deserves to be. Sign this petition, and let's bring the change we've worked for to life. It's time for our community to be heard!
