Stand with Ontario’s Roadside Assistance Drivers

We are calling for greater support for Ontario’s roadside assistance drivers and operators, who provide essential services to motorists across the province every day.

Like firefighters, paramedics, police officers, and other professionals working on or near Ontario’s roads, roadside assistance drivers often work in difficult and dangerous conditions to help people when they need it most. They respond to breakdowns, flat tires, disabled vehicles, collisions, and other roadside emergencies, often at night, on weekends, holidays, and in extreme weather.

Behind every service call is a driver and a business responsible for the truck, insurance, fuel, equipment, maintenance, training, and other costs required to provide safe and reliable service.

However, these operating costs continue to rise, placing significant financial pressure on the businesses and drivers providing these essential services. A sustainable roadside assistance system requires fair compensation, safe working conditions, and appropriate protections.

We Are Calling For

1. Financial Relief & Fair Compensation

* Fair and transparent compensation reflecting the real cost of providing roadside assistance.
* Fair mileage and hook-up/base rates, including compensation for operator time, travel, fuel, and long-distance calls.
* No unpaid or “free” kilometres when an operator is required to travel to provide a service.
* Regular rate reviews and appropriate adjustments for significant increases in fuel, inflation, insurance, and operating costs.
* Greater transparency throughout the contracting and payment chain.

2. Safety

* Stronger protection for roadside assistance drivers working near active traffic.
* Greater public awareness and enforcement of Move Over and Slow Down requirements.
* Access to appropriate safety equipment, training, and protection for roadside work in severe weather and at night.

3. Worker Benefits & Protections

* Fair and transparent working arrangements.
* Access to appropriate safety and training programs.
* Protection for workers injured while performing roadside assistance duties.
* Greater support for the physical and mental demands of this occupation.

This petition is not an attack on any individual company, contractor, roadside assistance organization, or insurer.

It is about recognizing the essential role roadside assistance professionals play in Ontario’s road safety and transportation network.

When roadside assistance businesses can operate sustainably, maintain safe equipment, retain experienced drivers, and respond when motorists need help, everyone on Ontario’s roads benefits.

We are calling on provincial authorities, roadside assistance organizations, contracted service providers, and other relevant stakeholders to work together toward a fair, transparent, safe, and sustainable system for the people who provide these essential services.
