Support Official Civic Unity: Include NYC’s Mayor at the 9/11 Ground Zero Ceremony
The Issue
To the Board of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and Event Organizers:
We, the undersigned New Yorkers and supporters, stand together to affirm that the annual September 11 Commemoration at Ground Zero belongs to all New Yorkers and serves as a solemn symbol of national unity.
The September 11 remembrance ceremony has long maintained a tradition of non-partisanship, where public officials attend strictly as silent witnesses to honor the lives lost, support surviving families, and represent the city as a whole. Disinviting or excluding the sitting, democratically elected Mayor of New York City undermines this longstanding precedent of unity and politicizes a day reserved for sacred reflection.
We petition the 9/11 Memorial & Museum leadership to:
1. Maintain Non-Partisan Precedent: Uphold the tradition of allowing elected municipal leaders to stand in quiet solidarity on behalf of all NYC residents, regardless of political debate or disagreement.
2. Keep the Focus on Unity: Reject calls to exclude city leadership, ensuring that September 11 remains a day dedicated to honor, reflection, and community resilience rather than political division.
By preserving civic representation at Ground Zero, we honor the memory of the victims and reinforce that New York City stands united in remembrance.
