The Issue
My name is [Name], and I am one of the 15,000 nurses in New York City who have taken the difficult step of striking to preserve our healthcare. Working in the emergency room, I am constantly exposed to contagious illnesses, which I can easily bring home to my family. My job is not only demanding, it’s dangerous. Every day, I face the possibility of injury due to the physical nature of my work and the environment we work in. Raising the cost of my healthcare or stripping it away altogether is an injustice. How am I to provide excellent healthcare to others if I cannot receive the care I need when I’m sick?
The hospitals in NYC have refused to return to the negotiation table to discuss our contracts. This standoff has forced us, the nurses dedicated to caring for our patients, to stand outside in the cold, without pay, while our health insurance has been inactivated by the hospitals. This is not the situation any of us want to be in; we long to return to our rightful place, taking care of those in need within the hospitals.
Personally, this deadlock has impacted my ability to receive essential medical care. After an asymmetrical result on my mammogram, I was due for a follow-up test. However, without active insurance, I cannot proceed with the necessary medical assessments, leaving me worried about my health.
To make matters worse, hospitals are distorting the narrative by inflating our salaries and portraying nurses as greedy. This is deeply unfair; we seek nothing more than to retain the healthcare we rightly deserve and need. Providing nurses with adequate healthcare ensures we can continue to do our jobs effectively and safely, which ultimately benefits every patient we care for.
We urge the hospitals to reconsider and return to negotiations to resolve this pressing issue. Supporting our cause means supporting safe and fair working conditions for the dedicated individuals who are the backbone of our healthcare system.
Please sign this petition and help us protect the rights and health of NYC’s nurses. Your support can make a difference, not only for us but for every patient who depends on us for care.
