Support National Hate Crime Awareness Week and say there is no place for hate in the UK
The Issue
The Prime Minister has declined an invitation to add his support to National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2023 and to publicly state that there should be no place for hate in the UK under his government.
We would like your support to change his mind, to encourage him to stand in solidarity with the thousands of people and communities across the UK who have had their lives blighted by mindless acts of hate and prejudice.
Last year there were 155,841 Hate Crimes up 26% recorded in England and Wales, year ending 31st March 2022.
- Race Hate Crime 109,843 reports up 19%
- Faith Hate Crime 8,730 reports up 37%
- Sexual Orientation Hate Crime 26,152 reports up 41%
- Disability Hate Crime 14,242 reports up 43%
- Transgender Hate Crime 4,355 reports up 56%
The Government's last Hate Crime Action Plan ended in 2020, and so far despite the huge rise in reported hate crime, it has not been updated.
National Hate Crime Awareness Week - is a national week of action to encourage the authorities, key partners and communities affected by hate crime to work together to tackle hate crime across the UK.
Previously our 'No To Hate Crime Campaign' and later the NationalHCAW week received the support of the every Prime Minister (from Brown, to Cameron to May) every year between 2009 to 2018.
Mark Healey was awarded a 'Points of Light' Award in 2015 by Prime Minister David Cameron for his anti-hate crime work and creating the national week.
Between 2019 to 2022 the Prime Minister's Office failed to respond to requests for their Statements of Support (perhaps Boris was too busy with Covid, and Liz was not in office long enough to respond), but this year Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has declined to add his support.
He is the first Prime Minister to officially decline his support.
We want to live in a country where there is no place for hate of any kind.
Which is why we are calling upon everyone to help us change the Prime Minister's mind.
We would like to see the Prime Minister voice his support for National Hate Crime Awareness Week.
We would like to see him encourage his Ministers, especially the Home Secretary to add their support to the national week.
We believe it is time that the Government updated it's out of date Hate Crime Action Plan and committed to end hate crime across the UK.
Even if we can't change his mind - adding your support to this campaign is a great way to show your solidarity with those 155,841 victims of hate crime - to show them that they are not alone.
We need to stand together, to say there is no place for hate, and ensure that action is taken to tackle hate crime across the country, so everyone can live in peace and harmony together.
Noone should be targeted with hate and prejudice because of who they are.
National Hate Crime Awareness Week is due to take place between the 14th to 21st October 2023.
Tackling hate crime is everyone's concern and should never be or become a party-political issue. Let's End Hate Together!
We are asking everyone to add your support and share as widely as possible.
