Support Naming the Payne’s Cove Bridge the Iva Lee Nunley Memorial Bridge

The Issue

We are asking for the bridge in Payne’s Cove to be officially named the Iva Lee Nunley Memorial Bridge in honor of a woman whose life, kindness, and legacy were deeply connected to this community.

Iva Lee Nunley, born Iva Lee Oliver, lived a life rooted in Payne’s Cove. Historical records and family documents show that she operated a small country store beside the bridge, and the land there was at one time in her name as well. Her store served local residents traveling through the area, making the bridge and crossing an important part of both her daily life and the life of the community.

She is remembered not only for her connection to the land, but for her generosity. Those who knew her remembered that she helped feed people in need and never collected what was owed on store debts. Though she passed away on January 5, 1964, at only 42 years old, her memory has lived on through her family and through the stories still shared by longtime residents of Payne’s Cove.

This effort is supported by historical evidence, including original family documents tied directly to the site, the original store ledger, a 1949 Certificate of Membership to the Sequachee Valley Electric Cooperative for the store itself, a lease agreement bearing the original signatures of her grandparents, and a 1947 U.S. Geological Survey map showing structures at the road intersection and creek crossing where the bridge stands. The proposal is also being supported by the Grundy County Historical Society, and the store is still remembered by longtime local residents.

Naming this bridge in Iva Lee Nunley’s memory would honor not only her life, but also an important piece of Payne’s Cove history. It would preserve the story of a woman whose kindness touched her community and whose name remains tied to this land and crossing.

Please sign this petition to support the naming of the Iva Lee Nunley Memorial Bridge.
