Support Moratorium to STOP Renewable Energy Projects From Destroying Mohave County

The Issue

Right now, in Mohave County, over 85,000 acres are currently under attack by huge utility-scale renewable energy projects. Mohave County has received numerous applications proposing these projects and many, many more are coming. These projects range from massive wind and solar farms to hydrogen fuel production and storage. Many of these proposed projects do not intend to provide affordable power to Mohave County residents and plan to sell their energy to California and Nevada.

On federal lands, projects must go through a very specific public process that includes analysis of long-term and cumulative impacts on both the human and natural environment. Currently, there is NO such accountability or process required in Mohave County on non-public lands for utility-scale renewable energy projects.

The proposed moratorium is for a temporary pause to allow Mohave County to amend rezoning ordinances, take a hard look at the general plan, and request important requirements before a rezone is approved or denied. Possible requirements may include but are not limited to NEPA environmental assessments, power purchase agreement in place (not speculative), longer public notice periods, and multiple meeting opportunities that are convenient for members of the public.

*This moratorium exempts residential projects, private company projects to provide power to support their own energy load, and local co-ops or electric companies that are trying to produce power for our citizens. Mohave County is not attacking your private property rights, as some of the proponents of these projects want you to believe.

By signing this petition, I fully support the Mohave County Board of Supervisors to vote in favor the proposed moratorium on Oct.16th, 2023 to STOP utility-scale renewable energy projects from taking over our beautiful Mohave County with no accountability.
