The Issue

Social media should never come at the cost of children's mental health. But Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has knowingly designed its platforms to keep young users online longer, even when it causes serious harm.

Now, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is fighting back. In a landmark lawsuit, the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office is holding Meta accountable for intentionally creating features that exploit teens’ psychological vulnerabilities, including constant notifications, infinite scroll, and algorithmic engagement loops. These features are not accidental. They are designed to keep teens hooked and to drive profits.

Internal research from Meta has shown that Instagram contributes to anxiety, depression, and body image issues in teenagers, particularly teen girls. One study revealed that 13.5 percent of teen girls said Instagram worsened thoughts of suicide. Another showed that 17 percent said it made eating disorders worse.

Meta has had this data for years, but it chose not to act.

We are calling on the Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell to continue pursuing this case fully and without delay, and to show the public that no company is above responsibility when children are harmed.

We support the following actions:

  • A full public trial of Meta’s design practices and their impact on teen mental health
  • Legal accountability for platforms that intentionally design for addiction
  • Stronger consumer protection laws at the state level to prevent future harm to minors
  • Increased transparency about how platforms target and affect young users

This case could set a national precedent. Parents, educators, and mental health professionals across the country are watching to see whether one of the world’s most powerful companies can be held accountable for exploiting children for profit.

Please sign this petition to stand with Massachusetts in this fight. Let us show that young people's health and well-being matter more than clicks and ad revenue.
