Support Markey's Plan to Stop Supreme Court from Being Stolen

The Issue

With the passing of the historic Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, our country has reached a difficult crossroad. Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans plan to take advantage of this situation to stuff the Supreme Court with another Trump nominee, despite the fact that in 2016 they chose to block Merrick Garland, an Obama Administration nominee, for 11 months. At the time, McConnell claimed that this was out of respect for the upcoming election and a desire for the wishes of the American people to be expressed through a new president. Now, with less than 2 months until an election, they have no such qualms.

     Harm to the Court

This hypocrisy is dangerous to the sanctity of the Supreme Court as an institution, and to our democracy; it is clear that Senate Republicans will take whatever stance they feel justifies them making appointments, and justifies blocking Democratic appointments. It is the sort of partisan politics that can only ever be harmful, and could do lasting damage to our politics. We cannot allow Senate Republicans to act so egregiously. Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey has offered an incredibly strong stand, and a plan to make clear that Senate Republicans cannot simply define the rules for themselves.

     Markey's Plan

On Twitter on September 18th, Markey said, "Mitch McConnell set the precedent. No Supreme Court vacancies filled in an election year. If he violates it, when Democrats control the Senate in the next Congress, we must abolish the filibuster and expand the Supreme Court." This outlines a clear and substantive path forward; the consequences to Republicans for writing their own rules are spelled out, and the remedy for them stealing the Court should they ignore this warning are clear. The goal of this petition is to show Senator Markey that there is support for this idea, and to give him an additional tool to convince other Democrats of that support. It is imperative that the Senator know he is not alone in believing this bold stand is necessary in this moment, and that should it come to it, there is support for following through with it.

May Ruth Bader Ginberg's memory be a blessing.
