I was taking my power walk (do they even call it that anymore?) this afternoon in 90 degree heat & humidity. It was uncomfortable, to be sure. As hot and sweaty as I was, it was *my* choice to go walking in this heat. Plus I got to wear a tee shirt and cotton skimmers and go when the sun wasn't its brightest. When it's this miserable outside, my thoughts go to those who have no choice but to suffer in this heat. Construction workers, homeless people (through no fault of their own), those who can't afford AC, homeless animals . . .and cops. Now imagine having to wear a utility belt weighed down with a gun, mace, Taser gun, handcuffs, flashlight, and other stuff - plus a bulletproof vest that weighs at least five pounds. Then on top of that, having to run and chase down a crime suspect. In 90-degree heat. Think about it. I know I couldn't do that job. But cops do - and Madison PD does it with dignity. If you see an officer, please offer to buy him or her an icy cold ice tea when it's sweltering like this. Then offer your sincere gratitude for what they do for us every day - whether it's -30 or 100 degrees outside. All the best. --Paula Fitzsimmons
