With any right, including freedom of speech, comes a sense of personal responsibility. Especially when it potentially impacts thought at a state-run, tax-payer owned university.
I've been reading, with concern, about a course taught at the UW-Madison about "The Problem of Whiteness."
This is one of the aspects that is unequivocally unacceptable. Per Madison.com, this professor wrote on social media the following:
" . . .In another from the same night, Sajnani linked to a song called “Officer Down” and wrote, “Watching CNN, this is the song I am currently enjoying in my head.”
" . . .In one tweet, posted the night last July when five police officers were killed by a gunman in Dallas, Sajnani included a photo of news coverage of the shooting and wrote, “Is the uprising finally starting? Is this style of protest gonna go viral?”
Again, this is someone who is impacting thought at a state-run university.
One of the first things I did this morning was to write and call my state senator & rep, as well as Chancellor Rebecca Blank - I let them know that I don't want my hard-earned tax dollars subsidizing this brand of hate.
If you're as outraged as I am, I urge you to call or email (preferably both) your state reps. I also called Chancellor Blank's office and left a message with staff. Her contact info is Email: chancellor@news.wisc.edu
Phone: 608-262-9946
It's not enough to let off steam on social media. We need to express our thoughts to the decision makers.
And don't feel badly about calling your reps or feeling that "you're taking up their time." They work for us - not the other way around.

All the best.
