Support low paid workers in General Practice
The Issue
Every year, your local GP surgery in England receives an increase in their funding of 2.1%.
This is needed to fund increases in costs and also to reward the team who work in general practice [your doctor's surgery] - these highly trained team members will soon move to other roles outside of the NHS, taking with them their experience and their signposting knowledge for patients.
The lack of investment over the years has meant that GP's, who are in the main independent contractors or partnerships, cannot give their team the recommended pay rise each year like the rest of the NHS.
Inflation is now over 10%
Most practice staff who are not clinicians are on pennies over minimum wage - knowledgeable and dedicated back office staff will move on unless the funding changes and they can be paid and rewarded for their skills and dedication. Contrary to what the media loves to portray, these teams work extremely hard to help and advise patients and years of experience could be lost.
The national pay award [Agenda for Change] is centrally funded, but your local surgery isn't funded in the same way
Very experienced receptionists, nurses, dispensers, admin staff, and GP's aren't getting any where near the same as others in similar roles, and if they are then it will reduce the overall budget your local doctor has to spend on supporting patients and their healthcare needs. The teams will soon find work elsewhere.
MP's aren't interested, successive health ministers aren't interested, this is the continued defunding of your local healthcare services.
I would like to raise this issue of the huge gap in funding and have it discussed in parliament, before local surgeries lose valuable members of their team and access to healthcare become even harder as the jobs become much less attrractive
I'm looking for support to raise the issue in parliament - we need to ensure all of our NHS workers are paid properly and rewarded for their dedication and hard work
