Support Little Caribbean’s Legacy with Street Co-Namings
The Issue
Co-Name Little Caribbean's Streets
In 2017, Brooklyn's Little Caribbean became an officially designated neighborhood, thanks to the work of Shelley Worrell, founder of I AM CARIBBEING. Now we're asking the City to take the next step: co-naming three streets One Love Little Caribbean Blvd and Shirley Chisholm Way.
Why it matters:
The Caribbean Diaspora has shaped New York City's economy, culture, and civic life, and nowhere more visibly than in Flatbush, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, and East Flatbush.
Co-namings would:
- Support Black, Afro-Caribbean, and Latinx-owned businesses
- Preserve the neighborhood's history and immigrant roots
- Strengthen a sense of place and belonging for residents and visitors
- Encourage public-private partnerships and economic development
Why these names
Shirley Chisholm Way: Chisholm was born in Brooklyn to Barbadian and Guyanese parents and became the first Black woman elected to Congress.
One Love Little Caribbean Blvd: This name honors the community itself.
The neighborhood has already shown strong support. Co-naming these streets would recognize Little Caribbean as part of New York City's identity for generations to come.
Help us reach 5,000 signatures by December 1.
