The Issue

The decision of Lidl's store, a crucial amenities provider on Lang Stracht, to cease operations has struck all of us rather hard. This well-loved store has provided the community with affordable shopping options for 25 years, demonstrating how integral it is to the local economy and our ways of life.  The proposal to utilise the old Press & Journal site for a new Lidl outlet is one we emphatically support.

It is important to note that Lidl do not want to close.  However, due to issues with their current lease, they have no choice but to close at their current site.  However, there is still hope.

The statistics tell the story clearly. Aberdeen has lost 30% of its local businesses in the last decade, and with each loss, the community feels the impact (Source: Aberdeen City Council). The Lidl chain has an established history of being a responsible and beneficial presence in our communities. With their commitment to affordable prices and sustainable products, they have been an invaluable asset to us.

A Lidl store in the old Press & Journal site will be a step to revive our local economy and re-purpose an otherwise unused space for the better. But for this to become reality, our local council's backing is critical. Hence, we— the local residents of Mastrick, Sheddocksley, and Summerhill — persistently urge Aberdeen City Council to support Lidl's bid.

In this challenging period, the comfort of a familiar, trusted shop can make all the difference. Let's work together to keep Lidl in our neighbourhood.
