Support LGBTQ+ Inclusive Schooling In Summit School District

Support LGBTQ+ Inclusive Schooling In Summit School District
The Issue
As Summit County residents and voters, we support our school district's efforts to create safe and inclusive spaces for all students and staff. We support the Summit School District resolution for inclusion of LGBTQ+ representation in curriculum and standards (Resolution #2022-23-8). This aligns with the Colorado Department of Education Social Studies Standards, which include LGBTQ-inclusive education and a comprehensive focus on other minority and marginalized groups in the state. This work reflects the 2019 Colorado Law (HB19-1192) and has been supported by Colorado voters.
LGBTQ+ representation in Summit School District's curriculum is vital for the same reasons it is vital to represent all populations in SSD's curriculum. It builds self-esteem and a sense of belonging when our children can see themselves in their learning. If we want to prepare our children for interacting with other people and for life after school, then our district's curriculum must reflect the diversity of our schools, community, and the world.
Every person in our district should feel that they belong in our school system. As Summit County community members, we support the district in their efforts to build safe and inclusive spaces for all students and staff.
*Note* this letter of support also has paper copies to sign around the county. Final numbers will be presented during public comment at the BOE meeting on Jan. 31st.
