The Issue

Women in Afghanistan are facing an increasingly dire situation as their rights and safety are severely compromised under the current political regime. Following the Taliban's takeover in August 2021, Afghan women have seen a dramatic reversal of the progress made over the past two decades. Access to education, employment, and public life has been significantly restricted, which has greatly diminished their contributions to society and reduced their autonomy.

The Taliban's policies have led to a pervasive atmosphere of fear and oppression. Reports from reputable organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch reveal a drastic increase in gender-based violence, including forced marriages and domestic abuse. Afghan women are being silenced, and many now fear stepping outdoors without a male guardian, effectively being imprisoned in their own homes.

This is not just a local issue confined to Afghanistan. It represents a global crisis for women's rights as it challenges the fundamental principles of equality, justice, and safety for women everywhere. Women worldwide deserve the right to live without fear and with full access to opportunities for personal development, education, and participation in socioeconomic activities.

We call upon the global community, international organizations, and governments to take immediate action. Implement sanctions to pressure the Taliban regime into upholding international agreements on women's rights. Increase funding and support for humanitarian organizations working on the ground to aid and protect Afghan women. Facilitate asylum for those at risk and ensure their safety in host countries.

By supporting this petition, you stand with Afghan women and all women around the world in demanding justice, equality, and safety. Sign this petition to send a clear message that we will not tolerate the infringement of women’s rights anywhere and that every woman deserves to live in safety and with dignity.
