Support Increased Funding to the Arts!
The Issue
The Juneau Arts & Humanities Council receives funds from the City of Juneau each year to support operations, programs, scholarships, and grants. The majority of funds received are used to regrant out to other artists and organizations. Here are the allocations from last year:
Individual Artist Grants: $12,000
Catalyst Grants: $3,000
Regranting: $115,000
Total for regranting and scholarships: $130,000
The total requests for grants and scholarships the JAHC received last year was over $260,000 - more than double of the amount the JAHC had to distribute.
This year, in light of the lack of funding in the public school system, it will be imperative to ensure high-functioning community arts education programs. Juneau’s economy heavily relies on a healthy arts landscape, and we cannot afford a lull in the training, education, and encouragement of new local artists. This is why the JAHC is increasing its ask to the city to fully fund this $260,000 need on behalf of other organizations.
If this need is not met, the arts economy of Juneau will suffer years from now, when we experience a falter in the creative output of our city. What follows will be less seasonal travel, less infusion of reliable economic impact to Juneau, and further diminishing of the vibrancy and population of our city.
Help the JAHC fully fund community arts and cultural organizations as they plan educational programs and initiatives to support the Juneau School District in this time of financial hardship. By increasing this funding from the city to meet the need of these organizations, we can all help ensure the future vibrancy, economic health, and creative growth of Juneau.
