Support Increased Funding and Support for Mexican-American Students in Higher Education

The Issue

As a computer science student and a Mexican-American, I, Daisy Fragoso, have firsthand experience with the challenges that come from not pursuing higher education. Mexican-Americans, particularly those not pursuing higher education, face significant systemic obstacles and societal disadvantages that hinder their educational attainment.

The Problem Despite comprising a substantial portion of the population, Mexican-Americans are underrepresented in higher education due to various barriers, including:

Financial Barriers: Many Mexican-American students cannot afford higher education due to limited access to financial aid and scholarships.
Lack of Support: There is a lack of targeted support programs that address the unique challenges faced by Mexican-American students.
Systemic Obstacles: Discrimination, language barriers, and immigration status issues further hinder the educational progress of Mexican-American students.

Our Demand We call on policymakers, educational institutions, and community leaders to:

Increase Funding: Allocate more scholarships and financial aid specifically for Mexican-American students.
Enhance Support Services: Develop and expand mentorship, counseling, and academic support programs tailored to Mexican-American students.
Address Systemic Barriers: Implement policies that reduce discrimination and provide support for students facing immigration-related challenges.

Why It Matters Education is a key driver of social and economic mobility. By supporting Mexican-American students, we invest in the future of our communities and the nation as a whole. Ensuring educational equity is not only a moral imperative but also essential for fostering a diverse and inclusive society.
