The Issue
As the child of immigrants, I have witnessed firsthand the struggles and sacrifices my parents endured for a chance at a better life in the United States. Their journey, like that of countless others, was marked by hope, determination, and an unwavering belief in the American dream. Sadly, today, many immigrant families are facing undue challenges and an hostile environment orchestrated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
ICE raids, family separations, and the constant fear of deportation have become the harsh reality for numerous immigrant communities. These actions do not merely disrupt lives; they tear families apart, cause children to lose their parents, and create an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty that haunts their daily existence. According to the American Immigration Council, there are over 10 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. who live in constant fear of detention and deportation.
This is not the America we aspire to be. Children should not have to live in fear of losing their parents overnight. Families should not be torn apart because of bureaucratic policies that fail to see the human element behind immigration figures. It's time to shift the focus from punishment to compassion.
