Support funding for youth sports in Arizona
The Issue
Growing up, I never had the opportunity to participate in sports like many of my peers did. Sports offer more than just physical benefits; they build discipline, teach teamwork, and provide emotional and mental resilience. They are a gateway to better opportunities and can change the trajectory of a child's life.
Today, I am a proud parent of two wonderful daughters who have dreams and aspirations of excelling in club volleyball and gymnastics. These sports can provide them with invaluable skills and experiences that will benefit them throughout their lives. However, the financial burden of joining these clubs is high, and it is a challenge for families like mine to afford these extracurricular activities.
According to the Aspen Institute's Project Play, families in the United States spend an average of $693 per child per year on sports activities. In some specialized sports like gymnastics and volleyball, costs can exceed thousands of dollars annually, including club fees, uniforms, traveling expenses, and equipment. For many, the cost is prohibitive.
This is not just about one family. It's about ensuring every child, regardless of their family's income, has the chance to participate in sports that promote physical health, improve academic performance, and lead to college scholarship opportunities. Arizona needs more funding initiatives and community support programs to subsidize costs for youth sports and to provide equitable access for all children.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for children in Arizona to have the same opportunities to excel, grow, and succeed through sports, regardless of their economic backgrounds. Please join me in urging local and state officials to create more funding opportunities for youth sports programs. Sign the petition to make a difference in our children's futures.
