Support for Women Domestic Violence Survivors
The Issue
Domestic Violence is a current issue in all states across our nation and will only continue to rise if we don’t stop it. Domestic violence is when violence such as stalking, abuse, and rape is committed on someone from the victim’s close domestic circle, someone who lives in their home or family relations. On average there are 10 million attacks per year. Female domestic violence survivors have come out and shared their experience of reaching out for help. When survivors were going through their abuse and they decided to reach out for help, their only resource for the most impactful help was their local police department. Most women feared they would be judged and some were even discriminated against in some way by the police. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 71% of women surveyed in 2021 affirmed that if there had been another resource available for help, they would’ve chosen the resource. In response to these results, our goal is to set up some other organization that women who are being abused can turn to. Our main goal would be an additional unit in most hospitals that would provide care for the survivors and their children to be taken care of until they can be transported to the woman's shelter. If we don't make this change, women will still feel discriminated against the police instead of giving them a resource that they can feel comfortable with.
