Homelessness, poverty, incarceration, and systemic inequity are inherently linked. Removing barriers to supportive services such as CalFresh is vital for successful reintegration and homelessness prevention.

Formerly incarcerated people are nearly ten times more likely to experience homelessness than the general public and face significant barriers in accessing CalFresh despite higher rates of poverty and food insecurity.

We strongly support Senator Becker's SB 1254. This important bill will allow and assist incarcerated people in applying for CalFresh benefits up to 90 days before their release, better preparing them for reentry.

By supporting SB 1254, we can ensure that formerly incarcerated individuals have access to essential nutrition assistance immediately upon release, reducing their risk of homelessness and aiding their transition back into society.
