The Issue

Thank you for bringing a quality sand volleyball facility to Lake Redding Park. The two sand courts constructed in 2020 have provided a home for area sand volleyball enthusiasts of all ages, and for the Redding Sand Volleyball Club, an instructional and competitive sand volleyball organization for area youth.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive as the facility offers a centrally located, safe, and clean facility for beginners and experienced players to congregate, hone their skills, exercise, and generally have a good time enjoying the sport in a beautiful outdoor setting.

The sport of volleyball, particularly the women’s sport, is experiencing unprecedented growth as evidenced by the attendance of 92,000 fans when Nebraska hosted Omaha in a 2023 outdoor stadium volleyball match and the 2023 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship which for the first time was hosted by a major television network.

Sand volleyball is growing in popularity right alongside the court game. More and more collegiate programs have added sand volleyball for their student athletes, including Shasta College and Simpson University. Growth of sand volleyball at the collegiate level, including the offering of athletic scholarships to some, has opened another path for local student athletes to take lessons learned at home and continue their success after high school. This includes most recently two local youth who had the opportunity to continue their sand volleyball play at the Division I and Division II collegiate levels. Since the two sand courts were constructed, the Redding Sand Club has grown to serve many local youth and the sand courts have seen significant regular use by the public at large.

The popularity of the facility comes with great benefits for our community, including expanded recreational and competitive athletic opportunities, pathways to college for local student athletes, engagement of youth in a healthy outdoor activity, and increased use of an underutilized area of the park which brings both local and regional visitors to Redding and makes Lake Redding Park a safer place for all.

However, along with this popularity comes a need for more courts to accommodate growth so these benefits can be sustained and enhanced. Two additional courts would better serve all users by reducing competition for court time, minimizing conflicts between casual social play and focused training sessions and practices, and allowing for continued growth of the youth oriented programs offered at the facility, including the Redding Recreation skills program and Redding Sand Club. It is also necessary to provide four courts to host sanctioned sand volleyball tournaments which would attract more visiting clubs and their families.

At a recent unsanctioned duel meet hosted by Redding Sand Club the facility was recognized by Chico Sand Club parents to be a very enjoyable and beautiful experience. Please consider continuing the good work that established this facility by supporting and working with us to expand and make it another jewel in Redding’s crown.
