The Issue

In recent years, the Pride Progress flag has emerged as a powerful symbol of love, diversity, and inclusion. It represents not only the LGBTQ+ community but also a commitment to creating a more equitable society. In Wiltshire, the opportunity to fly this flag outside City Halls for one month each year over the next five years has been met with resistance, with over 100 individuals protesting the initiative.

Reform UK and other groups that have not seen or heard from anyone from the LGBTQ+ community want to take this visible support once per year. This is only based on fear of the unknown and ignorance. Education and an open mind is all that is needed to crush the ideology that is seeping into the UK. It makes every day full of fear for many residents in Wiltshire. I ask, of those opposing this, do you live in fear daily? Is it not worth showing this support publicly? Does it hurt you to fly it? No

The Pride Progress flag is more than just a piece of fabric; it's a testament to our collective journey towards acceptance and equal rights for all. It symbolizes our dedication to embracing diversity and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, feel valued and respected in our community.

Flying the Pride Progress flag would send a clear message: Wiltshire is a place where everyone can feel at home, where differences are celebrated, and where equality is at the forefront of our values. It would foster a sense of belonging and bring visibility to issues faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

Moreover, allowing the flag to be displayed is an actionable commitment to supporting marginalized groups. It's a small but significant step towards inclusivity, with the potential to inspire other areas across the UK.

Critics of the initiative argue that this move is unnecessary, while the harsh realities of discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals continue to linger. According to Stonewall, one in five LGBTQ+ people have experienced a hate crime because of their identity, and the visibility that this flag provides can contribute to reducing these numbers by promoting acceptance and education.

We believe that the benefits of flying the Pride Progress flag far outweigh any concerns. It not only acknowledges the struggles and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community but also positions Wiltshire as a forward-thinking region committed to inclusivity.

We, therefore, urge the local councils of Wiltshire to approve the waving of the Pride Progress flag outside City Halls. This act of solidarity will underscore our commitment to equality and create a more inclusive future for our community. We need your support to make this vision a reality. Please sign this petition to ensure the Pride Progress flag can proudly fly, representing love, diversity, and acceptance for all in Wiltshire.
