Support Flying the Pride and Black History Flags in St. Pete
The Issue
St. Petersburg has always been known as a city that embraces diversity, creativity, and inclusion. But when the state ordered the removal of street murals celebrating LGBTQ+ pride and Black history—including the powerful “Black History Matters” mural in front of the Woodson Museum—many residents felt that part of the city’s identity was being erased.
Now, Council Member Gina Driscoll is stepping up with a proposal to ensure that our values remain visible. She’s asking the City Council to approve flying two new city flags: the “Harmony Flag,” which incorporates the Progressive Pride colors, and the “History Flag,” honoring Black heritage. Both flags proudly display the city seal, affirming that these communities are not separate from St. Petersburg—they are essential to it.
These flags were designed by Andrea Pawlisz, the same artist behind the iconic Progressive Pride street mural that was painted over by state crews. They are a way for St. Petersburg to reclaim its identity as a welcoming, inclusive place, especially after losing powerful public art due to political pressure.
Flying these flags would not only restore a sense of visibility—it would send a message that St. Pete belongs to all of us. Other cities like Salt Lake City have adopted multiple official flags to honor their diverse communities. We can do the same. We should do the same.
We urge the members of the St. Petersburg City Council to approve Council Member Driscoll’s resolution and make the Harmony and History flags part of our city’s official expression. Let’s affirm what we already know: that St. Pete is a city for everyone.
Sign this petition if you believe in a St. Pete that recognizes and celebrates all of its people—loudly, proudly, and publicly.
