Support First Peoples Rainbow Mob as Legal Advocate for WA's Aboriginal LGBTQIA+ Community

The issue

In 2018, the late Aunty Vanessa S, one of Western Australia’s first Aboriginal Trans women, and I founded the First Peoples Rainbow Mob. We recognised a glaring gap in support networks and advocacy services for our local Aboriginal LGBTQIA+ community. Our mission was to fill this void and provide a voice to those who needed it most. In 2022 I completed a diploma ATSILA (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Advocacy), and FPRM WA has been regularly advocating on behalf of the Aboriginal LGBTQIA+ community for the last 5 years.

Today, we continue that mission but we need your help. The First Peoples Rainbow Mob is seeking recognition as the legal advocate for our community on all matters affecting us. This role is crucial in ensuring our voices are heard at every level of decision-making.

We are being met with local a organisation who claims to support the LGBTQIA+ aging population, yet doesn’t support certain demographics within the aging population and they are challenging our right to be a Peak Body we are known to be, this has been supported by one local Elder who says we don’t have the right to speak for anyone, but at the same time refers to being the voice of the stolen generation.

The challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQIA+ individuals are significant. According to the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who identify as LGBTQIA+ often face double discrimination - both as members of the Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander community and within their own communities due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

By signing this petition, you're not just supporting us; you're standing up against discrimination and advocating for equal rights for all members of our society. Let's make sure that every voice in Western Australia is heard loud and clear.

Please sign this petition today to support First Peoples Rainbow Mob as the legal advocate for Western Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQIA+ community.
