Support Filipino farmers for a sustainable future

Support Filipino farmers for a sustainable future
The Issue
We, the undersigned citizens of the Republic of the Philippines, hereby express our deep concern over the worsening plight of Filipino farmers who continue to suffer from the effects of low grain prices, inadequate government support, and recurring natural disasters.
Despite their unwavering dedication and hard work, many farmers today are facing extreme financial hardship. The continuous decline in grain prices has made it nearly impossible for them to sustain their livelihoods. Compounding this issue, large traders have reportedly refused to purchase their produce, further deepening their economic distress and threatening their very means of survival.
In addition, the series of natural calamities that have struck the country—such as typhoons and flooding—have destroyed crops and farmlands, leaving our farmers helpless and buried in debt. What makes their situation even more unbearable is the continued presence of corruption and mismanagement within institutions tasked to provide relief and assistance. The alleged anomalies in flood control projects and the burdens imposed by the Rice Tariffication Law have further deprived our farmers of the fair support they deserve.
We therefore call upon the Philippine Government, through the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Agrarian Reform, and other concerned agencies, to take immediate and decisive action through the following measures:
- Implement a fair and stable pricing system for agricultural products, ensuring that farmers are adequately compensated for their labor and produce.
- Establish stronger market support systems and interventions that protect farmers from price manipulation and unfair trading practices.
- Provide effective disaster relief, recovery, and insurance programs that guarantee timely and sufficient aid to farmers affected by natural calamities.
- Conduct strict audits and transparency reviews to eliminate corruption in agricultural and flood control programs.
- Reassess and amend existing laws and policies, such as the Rice Tariffication Law, that have disproportionately harmed small-scale farmers.
We also urge local government units, private institutions, students, educators, and the general public to unite in solidarity with our farmers. Their role as the backbone of our nation’s food security must be acknowledged, protected, and valued.
This petition serves as a collective call for justice, fairness, and reform. Let it be known that we, the people, stand firm in our support for the Filipino farmers — the very hands that feed our nation.
Let us act now to restore dignity, respect, and security to those who have long been neglected.
