The Issue

Fernando Mejia, a longtime manager at Schmear Bagel & Café, has been a beloved part of our community for over a decade—greeting us at dawn, fueling our mornings, and sending our kids off with a high five. On June 12, shortly after being hospitalized and requiring ongoing medication, Fernando was taken into ICE custody outside his workplace: https://www.longislandpress.com/2025/06/13/port-washington-ice-detainment/

As constituents, we respectfully petition your office to advocate for compassionate oversight and assistance to ensure his humane treatment and due process, especially given his health concerns and deep community ties.

Responded
On Thursday, June 12th, I received a phone call in the early afternoon that ICE was in Port Washington. The resident on the phone stated that they were located at Razzle Dazzle Car Wash. As I was driving to the car wash, I called the owner and found out that ICE was not there. Then, I heard they were on Main Street. I went to Main Street and didn't see anything of interest. I don't know why ICE detained Fernando Mejia. I read in the Long Island Press that it was because his VISA had expired, and I'm not sure if that's accurate. I contacted the Port Washington Police Chiefs, and they don't know either. I'm going to find out what his warrant was for, but I'm unsure if ICE will disclose that information to me. I am a local elected official, and ICE reports to the Federal Government. Listed below is ICE's contact information. I plan to call the New York City Field Office tomorrow morning to obtain any available information. Email: NewYork.Outreach@ice.dhs.gov (for outreach and general inquiries related to the New York City Field Office) • Phone: (212) 436-9315 (for the New York City Field Office, located at 26 Federal Plaza, 9th Floor, Suite 9-110, New York, NY 10278) • General ICE Contact: For broader inquiries, you can use the ICE Detention and Reporting Information Line at (888) 351-4024 or submit inquiries via the ERO Contact Form on the ICE website.
