Support Family Housing in East York
The Issue
On February 23rd, The City of Toronto announced the construction of a modular community housing development at Trenton/Cedarvale Ave in East York. The building will be comprised of single units and would be provided to 64 single people currently experiencing homelessness.
Construction is expected to start in Summer 2021, with occupancy in Fall 2021.
The Goal
East York Community Cares is proposing this site be used for families experiencing homelessness. Family units can be built using the same builder in the same timeframe, but result in better outcomes for the new residents and community.
Why Family Housing?
- Toronto family shelters are at 100% capacity.
- Families make up 16% of the homeless population.
- Lack of affordable housing is accelerating the crisis.
- The waitlist for affordable housing in Toronto is 8.5 yrs.
Why Family Housing here?
- 71% of households surrounding the site are made up of families.
- Family amenities within 2-5 min walking distance of the site include:
*Parkside Elementary School/Canadian Martyrs Catholic School
*Parkside Childcare Centre/Plain Road Childcare Centre
*Stan Wadlow Park featuring a children's playground & splash pad
*Stan Wadlow Clubhouse offering after school & summer camp programs
*Kiwanis Public Pool
*East York Arena
***Subsidized children's programs offered at all amenities.
Why You Need to Get Involved
The City of Toronto has fast tracked this development, cutting corners and failing to disclose vital information requested by the community. After multiple community engagement meetings, the city continues to ignore legitimate concerns and recommendations of the community.
We need more passionate community members to speak up and join East York Community Cares to present a better solution to help our marginalized neighbours. Together, we can help families in need.
