The Issue

In recent years, many communities across the United States have experienced a substantial increase in mental health crises. The Monroe area is no exception, with local reports indicating a rise in calls for service involving individuals suffering from mental health issues. As concerned citizens, we have the power to advocate for change that ensures the safety and well-being of all community members, including those in crisis.

A proven solution to effectively handle these situations is the implementation of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training for law enforcement agencies. CIT is a specialized police-based program designed to improve officers' responses to mental health crises. By incorporating techniques such as de-escalation and communication skills specifically geared towards individuals with mental illness

CIT training helps prevent potentially dangerous encounters and reduces the likelihood of arrest and incarceration for non-violent offenses.

Currently, the Monroe Police Department has a commendable foundation in CIT training, but with the increasing number of mental health-related incidents, there is a pressing need to expand this program comprehensively. Enhanced and widespread CIT training will equip every officer with the necessary tools and understanding to interact with compassion and effectiveness.

Supporting an expansion of CIT training involves increasing funding, resources, and support for the Monroe Police Department. This should include regular training sessions, collaboration with mental health professionals, and community partnerships, ensuring that officers are equipped not only with theoretical knowledge but also practical experiences.

The ultimate aim of broad-based CIT training is not only to aid individuals in crisis more empathetically but also to foster a safer community environment where both police officers and citizens feel secure.

Investing in CIT training now can significantly reduce long-term societal costs associated with legal, medical, and systemic repercussions stemming from inadequate crisis handling.

CIT programs provide officers with training in:

• Recognizing signs of mental illness and emotional distress

• De-escalation and communication techniques • Safe crisis intervention strategies

 • Connecting individuals with appropriate mental health services and resources

Communities that utilize CIT-trained officers have seen significant benefits, including:

• Reduced use of force during mental health calls • Increased safety for officers, individuals in crisis, and bystanders

• Improved outcomes through diversion to treatment rather than incarceration

• Stronger trust between law enforcement and the community By establishing a robust CIT program in Monroe, the town can ensure that residents experiencing mental health crises receive compassionate, informed, and effective responses.

We urge the Town of Monroe to:

1. Provide CIT training for Monroe Police Department officers.

2. Establish designated CIT officers available to respond to mental health–related calls.

3. Partner with local mental health providers and crisis services to build a coordinated response system.

4. Allocate the necessary resources to sustain this program long-term.

Join us in making a difference for the Monroe community.

Sign this petition to urge local authorities to allocate the necessary resources and funding for the expansion of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training for the Monroe Police Department. Together, we can create a more understanding and safe environment for everyone.
