Help Canonsburg Residents & Small Businesses Facing Repeated Flooding

My apartment in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania has now flooded four times this month, causing significant damage and making my home unsafe and, at times, unlivable.

This is no longer simply an inconvenience. Repeated flooding can become a housing, financial, and community crisis.

Despite cleanup efforts and attempts to address the damage, the underlying problems have not been resolved. Every time significant rain is in the forecast, I am left wondering whether my home will flood again and whether I will have somewhere safe to live.

When a home becomes unlivable, residents can suddenly face displacement and, without adequate resources, the possibility of homelessness. Working full-time does not mean someone has thousands of dollars available for unexpected expenses such as hotels, temporary housing, moving costs, security deposits, replacement belongings, food, or increased utility bills caused by flood-related equipment.

People should not have to become homeless before they qualify for help.

But the effects of repeated flooding extend beyond individual households.

Small businesses can face damaged property, inventory and equipment, lost income, cleanup and repair costs, and temporary closures. These losses can affect employees, families, customers, and the local economy.

Landlords and property owners can also face substantial costs from repeated flooding, including property damage, repairs, cleanup, lost rental income, and the challenge of addressing ongoing drainage or infrastructure problems.

Residents, small businesses, landlords, and property owners may all be affected differently, but there is a common need: better resources, coordination, and long-term solutions.

I am asking Canonsburg and Washington County policymakers, local organizations, and community leaders to recognize the need for stronger emergency resources for those affected by repeated flooding.

These resources could include:

Temporary housing or emergency hotel assistance for displaced residents
Emergency rental assistance when a home becomes unlivable
Financial assistance with relocation and security deposits
Assistance replacing essential belongings
Help with increased utility costs caused by disaster-related equipment
Resources to help residents secure stable housing before they become homeless
Support for small businesses facing flood-related damage, closures, and lost income
Resources and guidance for landlords and property owners dealing with recurring flood damage
Better coordination between local government, nonprofits, disaster-relief organizations, and community resources
Clear information about where residents and business owners can turn for assistance after flooding
My situation is one example, but this issue is bigger than one person or one property. Repeated flooding can disrupt people’s homes, livelihoods, businesses, and financial stability.

This petition is not about blaming one individual or one business. It is about recognizing a gap in our community’s emergency resources and encouraging local leaders and organizations to work toward meaningful solutions.

Canonsburg and Washington County need a stronger system to help people recover from repeated flooding and prevent temporary hardship from turning into displacement, homelessness, or permanent loss of a livelihood.
