WeSea הינו ארגון בינלאומי, לא ממשלתי, שלא למטרות רווח. מטרת הארגון היא להעלות את המודעות לסביבה הימית, השבריריות שלה והבעיות איתם סביבה זו מתמודדת. אנו עושים זאת באמצעות הסברה, חינוך, מחקר ופעולות שימור.

אחת הבעיות החמורות בסביבה הימית היא זיהום פלסטיק. זיהום פלסטיק הינו הצטברות של אשפת פלסטיק (בקבוקים שקיות, קשים ועוד) בסביבה. כיום, אנו נתקלים באשפת פלסטיק בכל מקום ובכל זמן. פלסטיק יכול לזהם קרקעות, נחלים וימים. כ1.1 – 8.8 טון של אשפת פלסטיק מוצאים את דרכם מערי החוף לים מידי שנה.

זיהום הפלסטיק מהווה מפגע סביבתי חמור לעולם הימי: החיות מסתבכות בו, הוא מפריש כימיקלים מסוכנים לסביבה ואף מרעיל חיות שניזונות ממנו וחודר אל שרשרת המזון (בה שותפים גם בני האדם). לפיכך, יש להעלות את המודעות לזיהום הפלסטיק ולצמצם את כמות אשפת הפלסטיק בסביבה הימית בדחיפות.

לאחרונה, מוביל שמוליק שלם, מחזיק תיק איכות הסביבה מטעם עיריית אילת, תיקון לחוק העזר העירוני לאילת (רחצה על שפת הים), במסגרתו ייאסר שימוש במוצרי פלסטיק חד פעמיים בחופי הים, לרבות מכירה בפלסטיק בתחומי החופים - חקיקה שכזו הינה בעלת השלכות סביבתיות משמעותיות לשמירה על הטבע הימי של מפרץ אילת.

WeSea is an international, non-profit, non-governmental organization. Our mission is to raise awareness about the richness of the marine world, its fragility, and the threats it is facing nowadays. We are doing it through public education, research, and conservation acts.

One of the biggest threats to the marine ecosystem is plastic pollution. Plastics can pollute land, water streams and oceans. It is estimated that 1.1 to 8.8 million metric tons of plastic trash enters the oceans from coastal communities each year.  Plastic waste is a big threat to all marine life as well as all humans. They release toxic chemicals to the environment, and intoxicate animals and humans after ingestion, poisoning as a result the food chain. Therefore, it is urgent to raise awareness about plastic pollution and reduce the amount of plastic waste in the marine environment.

Recently, Shmulik Shalem, the chairman of environmental protection of Eilat, has been leading a modification to a municipal bylaw, which will prohibit the use and sale of disposable plastic products on the shores of Eilat. Such legislation has significant positive environmental implications for preserving the marine nature of the Gulf of Eilat.
