Community Medicine professionals are dedicated to a holistic approach to healthcare services, encompassing responsibilities in OPDs, immunisation clinics, disease surveillance, outbreak response, research, teaching, and community healthcare. They are often at the forefront of public health interventions, especially in times of crisis such as pandemics and natural disasters, providing essential support and services to vulnerable populations. Despite this critical role, MD Community Medicine graduates in India are yet to receive recognition through structured super-speciality pathways like other medical disciplines.

While the NMC is considering expanding eligibility for clinical DM programmes to branches such as MD Biochemistry, MD Emergency Medicine, and MD Tropical Medicine, we believe MD Community Medicine also deserves consideration, given its significant overlap in competencies with disciplines such as Infectious Diseases, Clinical Epidemiology, and Critical Care.

The Doctorate of Medicine (DM) super-speciality programmes are essential for fostering advanced skills and specialised knowledge that can transform Community Medicine, making these professionals even more effective health catalysts. However, as of now, such a pathway is non-existent for Community Medicine practitioners, which limits their professional growth and, by extension, affects the quality and innovation potential of community healthcare services in the country.

The introduction of DM programmes for MD Community Medicine graduates would not only enhance the capacity of these healthcare providers but also enrich the fabric of the Indian healthcare system. By specialising further, practitioners can improve health outcomes through research-driven approaches, policy advocacy, and strategic public health initiatives tailored to diverse community needs.

Countries around the world have already recognised the importance of super-specialisation in Community Medicine. Indian citizens deserve the same level of commitment to health innovation and service quality. It is time our educational and health authorities understand the necessity of this advancement and embrace the opportunity to lead in community health.
