The issue

Eleven years ago, we embarked on a journey with a vision – a vision to create a place where people from all walks of life, regardless of their background, age or abilities, could find a sense of belonging, purpose and opportunity.

Today, that vision is becoming a reality through our proposed development at Haines Reserve, in Hamlyn Heights.

Imagine a young person who has yet to discover their strengths, suddenly finding a passion for engineering, construction, mechanics or some other trade-based interest working with their hands.

Through our education and work-readiness programs, students from local schools will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced tradespeople, learning practical skills in engineering, fabrication, construction and railway operations.

For students living with disabilities, these opportunities provide an inclusive environment where they can participate, develop confidence, build friendships and discover what they are capable of achieving.

Our education programs are about more than teaching practical skills.

They are about opening doors to future employment, helping young people explore different trades before choosing a career path, and giving them the confidence to pursue opportunities they may never have considered possible.

For veterans, ex-service personnel, first responders and those seeking a new direction in life, the project will provide opportunities to reconnect with the community, share their knowledge and experience, mentor others and find renewed purpose through meaningful involvement.

It will also create a welcoming environment where people can support one another, develop lasting friendships and feel valued.

Haines Reserve is not simply about building a miniature railway.

It is about building an educational, recreational and community destination that brings generations together, develops trade skills, supports mental health and wellbeing, encourages volunteering and reduces social isolation.

However, we cannot achieve this vision alone.

We need financial support, dedicated volunteers, community involvement and public endorsement to help take this project to the next stage of development.

If you believe every young person deserves an opportunity, that disability should never be a barrier to participation, that veterans and first responders deserve continued support and that communities are stronger when people come together, we invite you to stand with us.

Sign this petition and lend your voice to helping transform Haines Reserve into a place of learning, opportunity, inclusion and belonging – a place where people don't just visit, but where lives can be changed, and futures can be built.
