The Issue
In 1993, I was brought to the United States as a toddler and later adopted by two U.S. citizens when I was just seven years old. However, my adoptive parents did not complete the necessary paperwork to establish my citizenship. Since then, I've spent my life here, embraced the culture, paid taxes, and followed every law. Now, at 35, I am facing the devastating reality of possible deportation, not to a place I consider home, but to a country I barely know.
This is a reality many of us around 1.2 million are facing due to administrative changes threatening to dismantle a path to citizenship for adopted immigrants like myself. We are not criminals but contributors to society, having gone through the education system, built careers, and integrated into communities.
The Child Citizenship Act of 2000 aimed to address cases like mine, yet it leaves a loophole for those of us adopted before the age stamp of February 27, 1983. This oversight leaves us vulnerable and in limbo.
We are advocating for a pragmatic amendment to the law that provides a clear pathway to citizenship for all adoptees, irrespective of their age at the time of adoption. A legislative refinement can ensure that adopted individuals who truly consider America their only home are not torn from it unjustly.
Your support can make a significant impact. Please sign this petition demanding action from our legislators to address this gap and protect law-abiding individuals who are American in every way except on paper. By doing so, we can uphold the values of justice and humanity that define our nation. Sign to support a fair chance for adopted immigrants to secure the citizenship they deserve.
