Support Canadian Retaliatory Tariffs to Protect Domestic Industries
Le problème
As a commerce student, I have learned how important trade is for Canada’s economy. I was surprised to see how much Canadian industries can be affected by decisions made in the United States. Recently, the U.S. imposed tariffs on Canadian goods such as steel and aluminum, which has made Canadian products more expensive and less competitive.
These tariffs are not just numbers. They have real consequences. Canadian industries lose sales, businesses face financial pressure, and workers risk losing their jobs. In some cases, tariffs of around 25% have been applied, which creates a serious disadvantage for Canadian companies trying to compete in international markets.
This situation also shows how dependent Canada is on the United States. Since the U.S. is Canada’s largest trading partner, a large portion of Canadian exports go there. This means that when the U.S. changes its trade policies, Canada is directly affected. This level of dependence makes the Canadian economy more vulnerable and less stable.
If Canada does not respond, these effects could continue in the long term. Canadian industries may weaken, and the country could become even more dependent on external decisions.
The solution is for Canada to implement targeted retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports. This would allow Canada to respond directly and protect its own industries. By taking action, the government can support Canadian businesses, protect jobs, and reduce economic dependence on the United States.
This approach would also promote fairness in international trade and help create a more balanced relationship between the two countries. Government action is necessary to ensure that Canadian industries are not left at a disadvantage.
We are calling on the Government of Canada to implement targeted retaliatory tariffs in response to U.S. measures. This action would help protect Canadian industries and strengthen the country’s economic independence.
Please sign this petition to support stronger Canadian trade policies and help protect Canada’s economic future.
