Support Big Noise Torry

The Issue

Big Noise is ran by a charity called Sistema Scotland but also depends on funding from the local council and independent contributors.

Big Noise Torry offers young people the opportunity to perform at concerts, it provides an after school club experience, there are holiday clubs and residential trips which children in Torry may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience. It has been an invaluable service to the families in Torry providing support and guidance to our young Torry people.

Big Noise in Torry has supported thousands of children ranging from infancy to young adults. There are three main groups, "Little Noise", "The Noise" which is the adult community orchestra and the school orchestra's where each primary class have the opportunity to form an orchestral group. All generations of the Torry community are welcome to join Big Noise.

There is real concern, that in the current political climate the funding they receive from Aberdeen City Council could be withdrawn which would have a catastrophic effect on their ability to support the Torry community.

Aberdeen Council approached Sistema Scotland about opening a centre in Torry in 2012, and they have successfully operated since 2015. Torry is targetted by the council as an area requiring more support.

Some of the arguments against continuing funding programmes like Big Noise are that there are music services across the city, and more music teachers could be provided.

Music provision is only half of what Big Noise Torry provide however, Big Noise Torry focuses on the holistic view of the young people who will be the future of Torry. It focuses on the creative as well as the educational wellbeing. Children have made friends, gained confidence and call Big Noise their safe space.

The after school provision offers snacks, games and learning. It allows children the opportunity to mingle with their peers - especially the High School orchestra where the Torry children are now in school classes separate from their Big Noise friends due to the size of the Academy catchment area.

The community orchestra and reference group who meet monthly provide a service which helps support the mental wellbeing of users meeting a community they may not otherwise know. Through music, they socialise and support creativity.

There are wellbeing walks, community events, visits to the local care home from staff and children.

Programmes like Big Noise have been proven to help improve core skills, such as confidence, discipline, strength, creativity and resilience.

Now is the time to show Big Noise how much we appreciate the services they provide and plead with Aberdeen City Council to continue financially supporting the project.
