Support Awesome Black's First Nations music venue in Maitland

Support Awesome Black's First Nations music venue in Maitland
The issue
I am reaching out to you as a proud Gamilaroi and Darug man, an artist, and a passionate community member dedicated to fostering authentic spaces and opportunities for artists within our community.
We’re calling on community, artists, and supporters to back Awesome Black’s funding application to Sound NSW for a new First Nations music and creative venue on Wonnarua Country (Maitland).
This will be the first space of its kind in the region — a dual-purpose recording studio and live venue that supports First Nations artists with real industry access, performance opportunities, and community programming.
Awesome Black is a First Nations-owned creative organisation based on Wonnarua Country (Maitland). We are applying for funding through Sound NSW to build a new community-focused venue — one that will support local and regional Blak artists through:
🎶 A professional-grade music and podcast studio
🎤 A live performance space for regular gigs and open mics
💼 Artist development and job opportunities
📚 Community events, workshops, and residencies
Right now, there are no dedicated First Nations-led music venues in the Hunter. This project will change that — creating a sustainable, self-determined cultural hub in Maitland that offers real opportunity and regional pride.
We’re now in the assessment process and the panel has asked us to provide letters from local partners and community members. As someone we've already had such a strong collaborative relationship with—and who shares the vision for a more vibrant, culturally rich creative scene here in Maitland—we’d really value your voice as part of this next stage.
The grant would help us take the next big step in expanding our studio into a dual-purpose recording and live venue space, with hospitality and flexible programming. It’s the first venue of its kind led by a First Nations team in the region, and we’re aiming to make it something the whole community can connect with and benefit from.
We need your support to show that the Maitland community backs this vision. Sign this petition to support our application and help us bring this venue to life.
Sign your name and share with your networks — especially if you’re a local artist, community member, or creative ally. Let’s build something Blak and brilliant, together.
Please make your voice heard by signing this petition. Your support is crucial in bringing this vision to life and ensuring that this valuable community asset is developed to support current and future generations of First Nations artists. Together, we can make this dream a reality for Maitland and beyond.
Sign now and stand with us in creating something truly special.
