Behind the high walls and iron gates of Ohio’s prison system, Correctional Officers serve as the custodians of order and safety, often facing daily risks from those they supervise. For too long, these dedicated men and women have been targets of violence and retribution, working under conditions where the threat of assaults and even fatalities are a grim reality.
In a tragic and deeply painful incident, we lost one of our own. Andy’s Law — House Bill 338 is named in memory of Ohio Correctional Officer Andrew Lansing, who paid the ultimate price while honourably discharging his duty at Ross Correctional Institution. His legacy must command action to ensure that his sacrifice wasn’t in vain.
This legislation aims to introduce stricter penalties for assaults on and killings of Correctional Officers, recognizing these egregious acts as felonies worthy of the same gravity as if they occurred outside prison walls. It's time for us to rectify the disparity where crimes committed behind the gates are often trivialized. Andy’s Law holds inmates accountable, ensuring that a felony committed within the penal system garners the comprehensive legal consequences it deserves, just as it would elsewhere.
Furthermore, House Bill 338 will incorporate enhanced safety protocols to protect those who risk their lives daily to uphold Ohio’s justice system. Their commitment to public service and safety merits robust legislative protection.
