The Issue
I have always believed in standing up for our seniors and people with disabilities, as they are pillars of our community who deserve dignity, respect, and the right to mobility. On May 28, from 11 AM to 2 PM, there will be a protest to highlight the struggles that these individuals face daily just trying to get around.
Public transit is a crucial part of our society, providing essential connectivity for many. However, for seniors and people with disabilities, navigating the transit systems is often an uphill battle. Limited access, malfunctioning elevators and lifts, lack of seating accommodations, and buses and trains that are not equipped to handle mobility aids are just a few of the barriers that prevent them from living their lives fully and independently.
According to recent data, over 15% of the population are seniors, and around 12% have some form of disability. This significant portion of our community regularly experiences systemic challenges with public transportation, leaving them isolated and helpless during their routine travels. It's frustrating to see how often they are left behind despite laws meant to accommodate everyone, like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The changes we are proposing are not only necessary but long overdue. We need more accessible infrastructure, including functional elevators and lifts, priority seating, and audible announcements for those with visual impairments. Additionally, drivers need more comprehensive training to interact and assist passengers with various needs, ensuring no one feels marginalized.
Join us in calling for immediate improvements to the accessibility of public transit. By signing this petition, you are standing up for a society where everyone, regardless of age or ability, can travel with comfort and dignity.
Please sign this petition to make our voices heard. Together, we can create a transit system that truly serves every member of our community.
