The Issue

To: Fayette County School Board Members

The Problem:

For children on the autism spectrum, the first day of school can be overwhelming. New environments, new routines, and new people often trigger anxiety and make it difficult for them to succeed. Paraprofessionals, who play a critical role in supporting these students, are often assigned without prior introductions or specialized autism training. This lack of preparation leaves students vulnerable, families stressed, and staff under-supported.

 The Solution:

We call on Fayette County School Board Members to adopt a policy that ensures: Specialized Autism Training for Paraprofessionals and Teachers – All staff directly supporting students on the autism spectrum should receive training in communication strategies, sensory needs, behavior supports, and relationship-building. Transition and Bonding Period Before the First Day of School Children with autism should have the opportunity to meet and spend time with their assigned paraprofessional and visit their classroom before the official first day. This step builds trust, reduces anxiety, and sets up both student and staff for success.

Why This Matters:

For Students: A smoother transition supports emotional regulation, learning readiness, and inclusion.

For Families: Parents can feel confident knowing their child is starting school with support in place.

For Staff: Training and early introductions give paraprofessionals the tools and relationships they need to succeed in their roles.

Our Call to Action:

We urge Fayette County School Board Members to adopt this policy so every child on the autism spectrum begins school with the preparation, support, and dignity they deserve. Together, we can make the first day of school a day of opportunity—not fear—for children with autism.
