The Issue

“Imagine being out in the city—running errands, taking your child to the park, or waiting for the bus—and needing to perform wudu before prayer. You look around, but there’s no clean, accessible space to do so. You’re left with two options: use a public restroom sink, often unsanitary and inconvenient, or struggle to find a discreet spot to wash before fulfilling your religious duty. This is the daily reality for many Muslims in Philadelphia.”

“As a city that prides itself on diversity and inclusion, we can do better. A designated public wudu station would not only provide a clean, dignified space for ablution but also promote religious inclusivity and public hygiene. Many cities around the world—like London, Toronto, and New York—have already implemented similar facilities, recognizing the needs of their Muslim residents. It’s time for Philadelphia to do the same.”

“This initiative is not just for Muslims. A public wudu station can benefit anyone needing a clean space to refresh, whether it’s a commuter rinsing off after a long day, a parent cleaning up after a toddler, or an individual with special needs requiring accessible washing facilities. It’s a simple yet powerful way to make Philadelphia more welcoming for everyone.”

“By signing this petition, you’re advocating for a city that embraces and accommodates its diverse communities. Let’s work together to bring this necessary facility to life!”

Philadelphia is a city known for its diversity, inclusivity, and commitment to public service. However, thousands of Muslim residents, workers, and visitors struggle to find a clean, accessible space to perform wudu (ablution), a necessary part of Islamic worship.

We are calling on the City of Philadelphia and community leaders to support the installation of a public wudu station in a key public space, such as a park, transit hub, or near a community center. This initiative will ensure religious accommodation, improve public hygiene, and promote inclusivity in our city.

Why This Matters:

✔ Supports Religious Freedom – Provides a designated space for Muslim individuals to perform ablution with dignity.

✔ Promotes Public Hygiene – A clean, designated area reduces improper water use in public restrooms.

✔ Creates an Inclusive Space – Makes Philadelphia more welcoming for residents and visitors of all faiths.

✔ Encourages Sustainable Water Use – A properly designed wudu station will be eco-friendly and efficient.

Our Goal:

We ask the City of Philadelphia and public works officials to work with community organizations to install an accessible, eco-friendly wudu station to serve residents, commuters, and visitors in need of proper washing facilities.
