The Issue

Theatre, to me, is more than just putting on a show. It's about creating a lasting impression that leaves individuals and communities pondering long after they've left the seats. This is especially important when it comes to issues that are deeply impactful yet often hidden, such as domestic abuse in teen relationships. As a teenager myself, witnessing friends and peers endure mental and physical abuse in relationships makes this subject personal. My goal is to raise awareness and encourage those in such situations, or those who know someone in such circumstances, to speak up and seek help.

High school is a critical time where many teens begin exploring relationships. Unfortunately, some of these connections can turn damaging, leading to hidden but very real abuse. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal abuse from a dating partner. This astonishing number highlights the grave necessity for awareness and education at a grassroots level.

By putting on a theater production tailored specifically for high school students, we can create a powerful dialogue around this issue—bringing it out of the shadows and into the light where it can be addressed. The immersive nature of theater makes it a perfect medium for engaging and educating the audience, allowing them to truly experience the often-overlooked aspects of this crisis.

This show would not just highlight the symptoms and consequences of teen domestic abuse, but also emphasize available resources and how to recognize an abusive relationship. A well-prepared educational segment could follow the performance, providing attendees with valuable information and a safe space to ask questions.

We need your support to bring this project to life. With enough backing from the community, local schools, and arts organizations, we can secure funding, a suitable venue, and necessary resources to develop a compelling and informative production that could save lives and change futures.

Join us in making a difference. Help us put on a theater production that pushes against the silence. Sign this petition to advocate for a high school show that sheds light on the issue of domestic abuse in teen relationships, helping countless young individuals foster healthy, respectful relationships. Your signature can be the first step in a movement towards safety, awareness, and empowerment.
