School Dressing & Grooming~changes

The Issue

All students who feel they have a right to express themselves read and sign this!!!!!!!

As students and parents of Coolidge ISD we would like to update the dress code to new standards! Students, especially girls, are being coded every day for clothes that are “drawing attention to an individual rather than to a learning situation” this apparel includes open shoulder shirts and above mid-thigh shorts. it is hard for girls to find shorts that are in dress code and feel confident in! It’s not that we don’t want to be covered but we would like some freedom to wear what is comfortable for us! We are not trying to distract the class or teachers which we want by doing otherwise, but are trying to express ourselves by wearing our clothes! When you tell a girl she needs to change her clothes because she is distracting boys, you are telling her her education is less important than that of males. This is sexism and the sexualizing of young girls. If you find young girls shoulders, legs, or chests sexual, the problem is not us. The problem is you.

Every day that you go to school, a handful of teenagers are pulled from learning for dress code reasons. Whether it be jeans that are ripped a little too high, shoulder exposure, or colored hair, your students' learning is at stake. It's a struggle for people to "dress for success" when all of their clothes are deemed "distracting" by a school administrator. Focus less about the cloth covering our bodies and focus more on the learning itself for a more successful future to the students. We like to dye our hair; it's a form of self-expression. Coolidge High School is restricting hair dying of "unnatural" colors, including grey or silver dye jobs, as well as a platinum blonde. Not to mention that the teachers and administrators don't follow the dress code either. There are several teachers with small nose studs, visible tattoos, and even some that have "unnatural" hair colors. As teenagers, we want to find out who we are through self-expression. How are We supposed to express Ourselves if the school doesn't allow us to? They tried to send us home for our nose stud and hair on the I'm going to fight for what I and many other students believe in.

males can not have hair below the top of the collar and their hair cannot be worn ponytails or buns! also can't have any designs in their hair cuts and get told they can't have piercings This is gender discrimination! and yet yall have this on the school website "Coolidge ISD does not discriminate" I want to get Coolidge ISD to change their policy this is outdated and old!  There is no reason a male student should not be allowed to have long Well kept hair should they choose Its a way of expressing who we all are!

So instead of stopping us from EXPRESSING ourselves Let us All students of Coolidge isd has this conversation about Our dress code and grooming it sucks.
