Give Substitute Teachers at CCSD the Raise They Deserve

The Issue

Substitute teachers at CCSD haven't received a raise in almost twenty years! Not only does CCSD deny us a livable wage and easy access to health insurance, but by filling the roles of licensed teachers in almost 700 vacancies across the city, we are also saving CCSD over $45 million!

The importance of this issue extends far beyond that of just substitute teachers--this is an issue that affects every single member of CCSD.

Students are denied the proper education they deserve due to both the substitute and teacher shortage we currently find ourselves in.

Teachers are often left to carry the burden of the substitute shortage by having to give-up their prep period to cover a class, or by taking on more students into their already overfilled classrooms.

Substitute teachers themselves are struggling to make ends meet with a wage that hasn't increased in almost two decades. Thousands are left without insurance, and almost 700 of them are being exploited by doing the full-time work of a licensed teacher for a fraction of the pay.

All of this is saving CCSD millions and millions of dollars, yet they claim that substitutes cannot receive a raise due to issues with the budget.

CCSD continues to ignore this issue and has shown no effort to fix it--to the point of declining an appearance on KNPR to discuss the issue! It is clear that this is not a problem with the budget, but the simple fact that CCSD does not prioritize giving its substitute teachers the livable wage they deserve.

Help show your support by signing this petition and demanding that CCSD acknowledge the work that substitutes have done for this district. They have gone too long without a raise, and deserve to be treated with respect and paid adequately for their time and work!

Adequate worker’s rights and benefits has been an ongoing fight for hundreds of years, and one to which we all belong. Solidarity between workers has always been the most effective method in achieving changes within the working class, and together we can meet our demands- it’s simply a matter of communication, organization, and taking action. Addressing this problem is just one of many that need to be solved, and unity among all of us who care about education will allow us to make the changes we want to see in our community.
